Working with Sole Traders in Leeds

Bookkeeping for Sole Traders
Accurate bookkeeping makes everything else easier.
We can help record and organise your business income, expenses and bank transactions so that your accounts are based on reliable information.

Keeping records up to date can help you:
• understand your income and costs
• prepare accurate tax returns
• identify missing or duplicated transactions
• monitor business performance
• prepare for VAT and Making Tax Digital
• avoid a year-end rush
If your bookkeeping has fallen behind, we can also help bring your records up to date.

Self Assessment for Sole Traders
Most sole traders who need to file a tax return report their business income and expenses through Self Assessment.
Fletcher & Gill can prepare and submit your tax return using your accounting records and other relevant information.

We can help with:
• calculating your business profit
• reviewing allowable expenses
• preparing the tax return
• calculating tax due
• explaining payment deadlines
• reporting other relevant taxable income
• dealing with appropriate HMRC queries
Our aim is to make the process clear so you understand what has been reported and what you need to pay.

Making Tax Digital for Sole Traders
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now an important issue for many self-employed people.
From 6 April 2026, qualifying sole traders and landlords with more than £50,000 of qualifying gross income are required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
The threshold reduces to more than £30,000 from April 2027 and more than £20,000 from April 2028.
The threshold is based on qualifying gross income before expenses, not taxable profit.
If MTD applies to you, you will generally need to keep digital records using compatible software and send quarterly updates to HMRC.
Fletcher & Gill can help with MTD-compatible bookkeeping, software setup and reporting.

VAT Support for Sole Traders
A sole trader may need to register for VAT if taxable turnover exceeds the relevant registration threshold.
Some businesses also register voluntarily.

If you are VAT registered, Fletcher & Gill can help with:
• VAT bookkeeping
• VAT return preparation
• VAT submissions
• Making Tax Digital for VAT
• general VAT accounting support
We can also help you understand the implications if your turnover is approaching the VAT registration threshold.

    • annual turnover
    • transaction volume
    • whether bookkeeping is included
    • VAT registration

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an accountant if I am a sole trader?
No. Sole traders are not generally required to appoint an accountant.
However, an accountant can help you keep accurate records, prepare your accounts, complete your tax return and understand your tax position.
This can become particularly useful as your business grows or your accounting becomes more complex.

What does a sole trader accountant do?
A sole trader accountant can help with bookkeeping, annual accounts, Self Assessment, VAT, Making Tax Digital and general tax advice.
The amount of support depends on your business and how much of the accounting you want to manage yourself.

Can Fletcher & Gill complete my Self Assessment tax return?
    Yes.
We can prepare and submit your Self Assessment tax return using your business records and other relevant tax information.

Can you do my bookkeeping as well?
    Yes.
Fletcher & Gill can provide ongoing bookkeeping alongside your annual accounts and tax return.
This can help keep your records organised throughout the year and reduce the amount of work needed before filing deadlines.

What expenses can a sole trader claim?
A sole trader can generally deduct expenses that meet the relevant tax rules when calculating taxable business profits.
What qualifies depends on the nature of the expense and how it relates to the business.
We can review your records and help identify expenses that should be considered when preparing your accounts.

Does Making Tax Digital apply to sole traders?
Yes, if your qualifying income exceeds the relevant threshold.
The rules apply to qualifying income over £50,000 from April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028.

Is the Making Tax Digital threshold based on profit?
    No.
The MTD threshold is based on qualifying gross income before expenses, rather than taxable profit.
For most sole traders, this will broadly mean gross business turnover, together with any other qualifying income that must be included.

Can you help if my bookkeeping is behind?
    Yes.
We can review the records you have available, including bank statements, invoices, receipts and accounting software, and help bring the bookkeeping up to date.

Can I change accountants during the year?
    Yes.
You do not normally need to wait until the end of the tax year to change accountants.
Your new accountant can usually contact your previous accountant and arrange for the relevant information to be transferred.

Should I remain a sole trader or form a limited company?
There is no single answer that is right for every business.
The decision can depend on profit levels, tax, administration, commercial requirements and future plans.
Fletcher & Gill can explain the accounting and tax considerations so you can make an informed decision.
